NPP Candidates Spent an Average of GH¢10m on Parliamentary Campaigns – Dr. Adomako Kissi

Dr. Dickson Adomako Kissi, Member of Parliament for Anyaa-Sowutuom, has disclosed that New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary candidates invested an average of GH¢10 million each during their campaigns. He made this revelation during an interview on Channel One TV’s The Big Issue on Saturday, December 14.

Speaking to host Selorm Adonoo, Dr. Adomako Kissi shed light on the substantial financial demands of political campaigns in Ghana, describing the process as financially draining. He expressed concerns about the high expectations placed on candidates by voters, which often compel them to make significant financial sacrifices.

He noted that many candidates commit vast resources with the hope of serving their constituents, only to face the disappointment of electoral defeat. “On average, every NPP Member of Parliament who participated in the race may have spent close to GH¢10 million. From primaries to now. GH¢10 million on average. They had faith and believed they could win. It’s very painful to invest so much and lose,” he lamented.

Dr. Adomako Kissi further acknowledged the challenges this poses to Ghana’s democracy, urging a reevaluation of campaign practices. He highlighted a conversation with fellow MP Henry Quartey, who also noted the unrealistic demands placed on ministers and candidates by the public.

“These demands are partly driven by the numerous promises made during campaigns. We need to tone down,” Dr. Adomako Kissi suggested, stressing the need for a more sustainable approach to political campaigning in the country.
