The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) has commenced a city-wide decongestion operation today, May 5, 2025, aimed at clearing unauthorised structures and goods displayed on pavements within the city.
Announcing the initiative, Mayor Richard Ofori Agyeman stated that the exercise will begin in key areas including the Kejetia (Otumfuo) Roundabout and the Adehyeman area near the Kumasi Zoo. He warned that any metallic objects or stalls found on the streets will be removed immediately.
“We will ensure that everyone occupying those spaces is removed. Any metallic object placed on the street will be cleared,” the mayor said in an address to journalists.
Mr. Agyeman explained that prior notices had been issued and the Assembly would no longer tolerate the illegal occupation of public spaces. He stressed that the continued indiscipline by traders has worsened congestion in the city and must be tackled firmly.
The mayor, who previously issued warnings to traders operating along pavements, has controversially threatened punitive actions including lashes for repeat offenders. He argued that conventional methods such as arrests and goods confiscation have failed to deter the practice, as traders often return to their spots.
The decongestion effort is part of the mayor’s broader agenda to restore order within Kumasi’s central business district and improve mobility and sanitation.
