Abu Jinapor Retains Damongo Seat

Samuel Abu Jinapor, the Member of Parliament for Damongo and Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, has won re-election in the 2024 parliamentary elections. The New Patriotic Party (NPP) candidate secured a second term with 16,222 votes, defeating the National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate, Adam Mutawakilu, who garnered 14,425 votes.

A total of 30,713 valid votes were cast, with 356 ballots rejected.

Tensions escalated in the Damongo Constituency following delays in declaring the election results, resulting in violent protests. During the unrest, the Electoral Commission (EC) office in Damongo was set ablaze by angry youth, causing extensive damage. Tragically, one person, identified as Sibannira Mukaila, an NDC supporter, was shot during the chaos and later died at St. Anne’s Catholic Hospital.

The Ghana Police Service has arrested 12 individuals linked to the violence, including the arson attack.

The National Peace Council and the West Africa Network for Peace Building (WANEP) have condemned the violence, calling on all parties to maintain peace and exercise restraint.

The Savannah Regional Electoral Commission has convened a Regional Inter-Party Advisory Committee (RIPAC) meeting to address concerns about the election results in Damongo. Meanwhile, Adam Mutawakilu, the NDC candidate, has petitioned the EC, asserting that he did not authorize anyone to sign agreements on his behalf.

Authorities are conducting investigations to prevent further escalation and to ensure justice is served.
