The Electoral Commission (EC) has appealed to political stakeholders and the general public for patience, emphasizing that only 24 hours have passed since polls closed for Ghana’s December 7 general elections.
Speaking at a press conference on Sunday, December 8, EC Chairperson Jean Mensa reassured Ghanaians that the commission is committed to delivering accurate and transparent results for both presidential and parliamentary elections. She stated that the EC is working diligently within a 72-hour timeframe to complete the necessary verification processes.
Her remarks came in response to a call from Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), who urged the EC to expedite the announcement of results following the concession of defeat by the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) presidential candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.
Jean Mensa underscored the importance of precision in the electoral process, noting that the commission is thoroughly cross-checking results to uphold public trust.
“We would like to ask that citizens exercise patience as the process is just 24 hours in. The verification process is elaborate and involves political parties and their agents. If results are ready before the 72-hour mark, they will be announced,” she stated.
The EC Chairperson also disclosed that the commission has so far received results from only the Ahafo Region and is working to process results from other regions.
The EC’s plea comes as political tensions rise, with some parties and their supporters eager for official declarations. The commission has urged all Ghanaians to remain calm and allow it to carry out its constitutional duty.
