#GhanaPolls2024: 12 Arrested Over Damongo EC Office Arson and Electoral Violence

The Ghana Police Service has apprehended 12 individuals in connection with violent incidents during the 2024 general elections, including the destruction of the Electoral Commission (EC) office in Damongo.

The arrests come after a group of agitated youth set fire to the EC office in Damongo Municipal Constituency, protesting delays in the announcement of election results. The fire caused extensive damage to the building and its contents, leaving the structure entirely gutted.

Eyewitnesses recounted that the frustrated youth stormed the EC office and ignited the blaze, expressing their anger over the prolonged wait for the results. The fire rapidly engulfed the facility, destroying vital election materials.

In a statement, ACP Grace Ansah-Akrofi, Director of the Police Public Affairs Directorate, confirmed the arrests and detailed the findings of preliminary investigations.

“Preliminary investigations have revealed that the suspects attacked and damaged state assets, including setting the EC office ablaze in Damongo. Additional acts of vandalism were recorded, such as damage to residences of district chief executives and collation centres in various areas,” she stated.

The suspects are also accused of breaking into a school feeding programme warehouse in Tamale and looting items, including food supplies.

The police have acquired footage of the incidents and are reviewing it as part of the investigation to identify and apprehend more perpetrators.

ACP Ansah-Akrofi assured the public of the police’s commitment to maintaining law and order, stating that officers had been deployed to key locations with intensified patrols.

“We urge the public to remain calm and cooperate with the authorities as investigations continue. Perpetrators of these criminal acts will face justice,” she added.

The arrests signal the security forces’ determination to safeguard Ghana’s democratic process amidst election-related tensions.
