The Coalition of Domestic Election Observers (CODEO) has called on Ghanaians to remain calm and patient as the Electoral Commission (EC) prepares to announce the official results of the December 7 general elections.
This plea comes amid growing concerns and demands from the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) for increased transparency in the electoral process.
In a preliminary post-election briefing on Sunday, December 8, CODEO lauded the credibility of the EC’s handling of the elections, particularly the setup of polling stations and the management of ballot counting. The group revealed that 99% of political party agents and all presiding officers at polling stations signed the parliamentary results declaration forms, bolstering confidence in the process.
“From setup to the counting of ballots at polling stations, the arrangements by the Electoral Commission were generally adequate and credible,” CODEO stated.
The coalition also highlighted the reliability of its Parallel Vote Tabulation (PVT) system, which uses data from a nationwide representative sample of 1,500 polling stations across all regions and constituencies. CODEO noted that it had received comprehensive results from all sampled polling stations by midnight on December 7.
CODEO assured the public that its PVT estimates, once released, would provide an impartial verification of the EC’s official results. However, the organization emphasized that it would wait for the EC to fulfill its constitutional mandate of declaring the results before releasing its findings.
“We urge all Ghanaians to trust the constitutional process and allow the EC to complete its work. The PVT will serve as an independent verification of the presidential election results,” CODEO assured.
The organization also commended various stakeholders, including the EC, the security task force, the media, political parties, and the general public, for their peaceful participation in the electoral process.
Additionally, CODEO acknowledged the early concession by the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) presidential candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, as a demonstration of political maturity and commitment to Ghana’s democratic principles.
CODEO concluded by urging citizens to remain calm and uphold the nation’s democratic values while awaiting the official results.
