EC Increases Media Accreditation for Election Collation Centres to 4,500

The Electoral Commission (EC) of Ghana has increased the number of media accreditations for covering the collation of results at constituency and regional centres to 4,500. This decision was announced during a press conference held on Friday, November 29, 2024. The EC clarified that the accreditation cards will be issued to the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) and the Ghana Independent Broadcaster Association (GIBA) by Sunday evening, with these organizations handling the allocation and distribution process.

The EC addressed concerns regarding an earlier directive that appeared to limit media access, explaining that it was intended to ensure minimum coverage at the collation centres due to space constraints, rather than to restrict access. The initial allocation proposed three TV stations and five radio stations per constituency collation centre, and five TV stations with seven radio stations at regional collation centres.

Following consultations with GJA and GIBA, the number of accreditations has been increased from the previously suggested 3,308 to 4,500, providing an additional 1,192 accreditations. The Commission reaffirmed its commitment to collaborating with the media throughout the electoral process to ensure transparency and efficiency. The distribution of accreditation cards is expected to begin promptly to facilitate media preparations for the upcoming December General Election.
