Rosemary Boadu, a 13-year-old girl battling end-stage kidney failure, received a lifeline as Rafik Mahama, the special aide to business mogul Ibrahim Mahama, visited her family with an additional GHS 20,000 to support her pre-transplant workup.
The visit comes ahead of Rosemary’s kidney transplant, fully funded by Ibrahim Mahama, the CEO of Engineers & Planners and Dzata Cement. Mr. Mahama covered the $25,000 cost of the procedure after learning about Rosemary’s plight through a JoyNews documentary titled *”Dialysis at 13,”* produced by Emmanuel Dzivenu.
Grace Akweley, Rosemary’s mother, expressed profound gratitude, falling to her knees as she welcomed Rafik Mahama into their home. The funds will support the family’s upkeep and preparations for the surgery scheduled for November 22, 2024.
During the visit, Rafik Mahama shared Mr. Mahama’s motivation for stepping in.
“Rosemary’s story deeply touched my boss’s heart. The very morning he saw the feature, he instructed us to make the payment immediately because he couldn’t bear to see the young girl in pain,” Rafik said.
He added that the visit was to ensure the family was ready for the medical procedure and to assure them of ongoing support.
“Rosemary is now part of our family, and we pray for her full recovery so she can return to school stronger than ever,” Rafik added.
Rosemary and her mother were visibly emotional, expressing heartfelt appreciation for the support.
“I never thought something like this could happen to me. God bless Mr. Ibrahim Mahama and everyone who has supported me,” Rosemary said, her voice trembling with emotion.
Her mother called the intervention a miracle, saying, “I am forever indebted to Mr. Ibrahim Mahama. He has given my daughter a chance to live. May God richly bless him and everyone who stood by us.”
Rafik Mahama highlighted Mr. Ibrahim Mahama’s commitment to philanthropy, stating that many such interventions often go unpublicized.
“We handle larger health issues quietly, flying people outside the country to seek healthcare. It’s usually only when the media reports on these cases that our efforts come to light,” he said.
As the pre-transplant evaluations begin this week, Rosemary’s family remains optimistic about her recovery, inspired by the generosity and support of individuals like Ibrahim Mahama.
