Transport ministers from ECOWAS member states have agreed to a strategy to make air travel more affordable across West Africa. Starting January 1, 2026, this initiative will cut aviation charges and eliminate specific taxes, leading to a 25% reduction in air travel costs.
This decision is expected to drive economic growth, enhance regional integration, and improve the movement of people and goods across member states.
During their meeting in Lomé, ministers highlighted that current fees, taxes, and charges account for nearly 50% of ticket prices in the region.
The ministers approved plans for a regional Supplementary Act to harmonize charges and align with International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) standards.
Furthermore, the ministers adopted regulations establishing shared standards and security measures across ECOWAS. Member states are now preparing to implement these fiscal adjustments, supported by ECOWAS and partner organizations, which will fund initiatives like a regional aircraft leasing company and maintenance center for more affordable services.
