On Thursday, November 7, 2024, Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin adjourned the House indefinitely once more, citing the absence of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) lawmakers. This follows the NPP’s request for a recall after an indefinite adjournment on October 22, 2024, aimed at resuming government business and overcoming opposition tactics.
The failure of the NPP caucus to appear in the chamber has caused a significant delay in proceedings. Speaker Bagbin expressed his disappointment, noting that the lack of a quorum and the absence of an agenda, as the business committee could not meet without the attendance of those who requested the recall, prevented any legislative work from proceeding.
In his address to the House, Bagbin emphasized that the session could not move forward without the necessary input from the business committee. He stated, “There is no order paper for today because the business committee could not meet due to the absence of the people who requested the recall.”
With no business on the agenda and the chamber largely empty, Bagbin concluded, “We are compelled to once again adjourn the sitting of the house.” He acknowledged the challenges Parliament faces but advised against adjourning daily, opting instead to adjourn indefinitely.
This adjournment follows escalating tensions between the Majority and Minority caucuses, which have led to significant disruptions in Parliament’s operations. With just 30 days remaining until the December 7 election, it remains uncertain when Parliament will reconvene to address the issues at hand.
