The Supreme Court has denied an application from Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin, which requested the court overturn its suspension of his ruling that declared four parliamentary seats vacant. In a decision on Wednesday, a five-member panel described the Speaker’s application as based on a “misinformation and misapprehension of the law.”

The Speaker’s argument suggested that the court lacked jurisdiction in this matter. However, the court clarified that it held jurisdiction because the issue required constitutional interpretation due to differing interpretations of the relevant constitutional provision. The panel emphasized that the Speaker’s challenge of the court’s authority was a misinterpretation of legal principles.
