UG-UTAG Rejects NEC’s Decision to Suspend Strike Over Galamsey

The University of Ghana (UG) chapter of the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) has voted against the National Executive Committee’s (NEC) directive to end its strike, which was initiated to protest illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey. The strike, which began on October 10, addresses concerns over the government’s alleged lack of action against galamsey activities that are harming river bodies and forest reserves.

In a recent vote at UG, 290 members opted to continue the strike, while 226 voted to suspend it, rejecting NEC’s October 24 decision to end the industrial action by October 29. Despite NEC’s call for UTAG members to return to classrooms by Tuesday and for students to resume classes on November 1, UG-UTAG members are advocating for the strike to persist until more substantial action is taken against galamsey.
