“Consider Yourself Sacked if You Join Nationwide Strike” – GMet Warns Staff

The Ghana Meteorological Agency (GMet) has issued a strict warning to its staff, cautioning them against participating in a nationwide strike organized by Organised Labour. The Board Chairman, Isaac Amoo, made it clear that any employee who joins the strike, scheduled to begin on Thursday, October 10, 2024, will face immediate dismissal.

Addressing staff at GMet’s headquarters in Accra on Wednesday, Mr. Amoo emphasized the critical role the agency plays in national security. He highlighted that GMet’s weather forecasts are vital for sectors such as aviation, agriculture, and emergency services, making it essential for staff to remain at their posts.

“GMet is part of the essential services of this country,” Mr. Amoo stated, urging employees to prioritize their duties. He added, “Any worker who will flout the directive should consider themselves as having terminated their appointment.”

The nationwide strike, led by Organised Labour and its allied unions, aims to push the government to take stronger action against illegal mining, commonly known as “galamsey.” The environmental destruction caused by galamsey has sparked widespread concern, leading to the demand for a state of emergency to combat the issue.

Despite these pressing concerns, Mr. Amoo underscored that GMet’s operations must continue uninterrupted, warning that participation in the strike could have serious consequences for national safety.
