The University of Ghana chapter of the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UG-UTAG) has overwhelmingly supported Organised Labour’s upcoming nationwide strike scheduled for October 10, 2024.
In a vote conducted within the chapter, 355 members (80.14%) voted in favor of the strike, while 88 members (19.86%) were against it, out of a total of 443 votes.
UG-UTAG President, Professor Ransford Gyampo, has been outspoken on the government’s handling of the illegal mining (galamsey) crisis. He recently expressed frustration with the government’s lack of action, calling for more decisive measures to tackle the issue.
Professor Gyampo’s remarks followed a meeting between President Nana Akufo-Addo and Organised Labour leaders, where the President requested more time to address concerns over galamsey.
However, Organised Labour announced the strike on October 1, citing the government’s failure to meet their demands for a total ban on mining and the declaration of a state of emergency to curb illegal mining activities.
