Thirty-two protesters from the Democracy Hub have filed a lawsuit against the Inspector General of Police (IGP) and the Attorney General (AG) over alleged human rights violations.
Represented by Madina MP Francis-Xavier Sosu, the protesters are seeking a court order to enforce their fundamental rights, including freedom of movement, protest, personal liberty, and freedom of expression.
The lawsuit follows the arrest of 53 individuals during a peaceful demonstration from September 21 to 23, which escalated into clashes with the police.
Nine of the arrested protesters are currently in prison, while others remain in custody.
The Ghana Police Service accused the protesters of obstructing traffic, damaging property, and dismantling barriers.
While the defense argued for bail, citing poor conditions in custody, the prosecution opposed, raising concerns about the protesters’ addresses. The judge denied bail, remanding the protesters until October 8.
