The U.S. Department of State has officially opened online registrations for the Fiscal Year 2026 Diversity Visa (DV) Lottery. Foreign nationals interested in applying for the lottery can submit their entries from Wednesday, October 2, 2024, at noon Eastern Daylight Time (4 PM GMT), until Tuesday, November 5, 2024, at noon EST (4:00 PM GMT).
The DV lottery will grant up to 55,000 green cards through a random selection process. Results will be available in May 2025, and selected individuals will be eligible to start applying for green cards beginning October 1, 2025.
Eligibility Criteria
The DV lottery is open to individuals born in countries with low immigration rates to the U.S. However, those born in countries with high immigration rates, such as Bangladesh, Brazil, Canada, China, India, Mexico, Nigeria, and others, are ineligible. Some individuals may still qualify through their spouse’s or parent’s country of birth.
All applicants must also have at least a high school education or two years of qualifying work experience within the last five years.
Registration Process
To participate, entrants must submit an online form and digital photo through the official DV lottery website. Each person is allowed only one entry, and any multiple registrations will lead to disqualification. The process is free, and applicants can include their spouses and children in their entry.
Selection and Notification
Winners will be selected through a random computer draw. Results will be available on the official DV lottery website from May 3, 2025, and will remain accessible until at least September 30, 2026. Applicants must check their status using the confirmation number they receive upon applying.
Fraud Prevention
The U.S. Department of State advises applicants to be cautious of scams. There is no fee for entering the lottery, and the department will not notify winners via mail, e-mail, fax, or phone. Applicants should only use the official DV lottery website to register and check their results.
