Man Who Vandalised Big Six Busts to Undergo Brain Scan

The Kwabenya Circuit Court has ordered Newell Gavu, the man accused of vandalizing the busts of the Big Six at the Airport Roundabout in Accra, to undergo a brain scan to assess his mental health.

This decision follows Gavu’s second appearance in court on September 18. The scan results are expected to be presented to the court by October 4, when the suspect is set to appear again.

The incident occurred in the early hours of August 31, around 3:00 AM. A private citizen, on his way to work at Kotoka International Airport, noticed Gavu using a hammer to destroy the statues and subsequently reported the matter to the authorities. In addition to damaging the busts, Gavu also vandalized several signposts in the area.

The 37-year-old, who works as a CCTV installer, was arrested by police shortly after the incident. During interrogation, Gavu provided inconsistent explanations but later claimed that a spirit from his dream instructed him to destroy the monuments.

Gavu resides with his parents in Oyarifa. The brain scan will help determine whether his actions were influenced by mental health issues.
