Benin Arrests Three Men Over Suspected Coup Plot

Authorities in Benin have arrested three men, including a former minister and a key figure in President Patrice Talon’s security team, on suspicion of planning a coup. The arrests were confirmed by the state prosecutor on Thursday, September 26, 2024.

Ex-sports minister Oswald Homeky was apprehended on Tuesday while allegedly handing over six bags of money to Elonm Mario Metonou, the head of the Republican Guard. Investigators believe the money was a bribe to Col Djimon Dieudonne Tevoedjre, meant to ensure he would not resist the coup, which was planned for Friday.

Businessman Olivier Boko, a close friend of President Talon and a figure with recent political ambitions, was also arrested. His supporters have condemned the arrest, describing it as an “abduction,” and are calling for his immediate release.

The prosecutor stated that investigations are ongoing to identify other possible suspects.

Benin, once known for its strong democratic credentials, has seen a shift towards autocracy under President Talon’s leadership, according to rights groups. Talon, however, has announced that he will not seek a third term in office during the 2026 elections.

This incident adds to the increasing number of coup attempts in West and Central Africa, with eight military takeovers in the region since 2020.
