Thirty-nine participants of the Democracy Hub protests have been remanded into custody following court proceedings, with a bench warrant issued for one additional protester who failed to appear in court despite being released on police inquiry bail and being aware of the ongoing proceedings.
Out of the 40 individuals brought to court, 28 have been remanded into police custody, while 11 others have been placed in prison custody for two weeks. The 28 in police custody have pleaded not guilty to the charges against them. However, the pleas for the 11 in prison custody are yet to be taken, as their lawyer requested an adjournment to study the charges after the charge sheet was only presented during the court session.
The protesters are facing multiple charges, including conspiracy to commit a crime (unlawful assembly), unlawful assembly, causing unlawful damage, offensive conduct conducive to a breach of peace, assault on a public officer, and defacement of public property.
The case has been adjourned until October 8, 2024.
