Democracy Hub Protesters Burn NPP, NDC Paraphernalia in Anti-Galamsey Demonstration

Protesters from the Democracy Hub’s “Stop Galamsey Now” movement took a bold step in their demonstration against illegal mining by burning paraphernalia of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and National Democratic Congress (NDC) at the 37 Roundabout in Accra.

The protesters, frustrated with the failure of both major political parties to address the illegal mining crisis, also known as galamsey, called out the parties for their lack of effective action to protect the country’s natural resources. As the paraphernalia burned, the demonstrators chanted a song associated with the ruling NPP, symbolizing their dissatisfaction.

In response, the Ghana Police Service, via a post on their X (formerly Twitter) handle, urged the protestors to maintain peace and avoid violent actions. “They are demonstrating their clear intention to be violent. We urge them to stop this,” the police statement read.
