“The 1992 Constitution has Many Defects”  – Speaker Bagbin 

Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, has highlighted significant flaws in Ghana’s 1992 Constitution, stating that the time for addressing these defects is long overdue.

Speaking at the University of Ghana Alumni Lecture on the theme, “30 Years of Parliamentary Democracy: The Journey Thus Far,” Bagbin emphasized the need for a comprehensive constitutional overhaul.

He noted that while the original focus of the constitution was to achieve political stability, this has come at the expense of national development. “We have succeeded in achieving political stability, but now we must shift focus to development. It’s not just about reforming; we must transform everything,” Bagbin stated.

One of the key issues he pointed out is the excessive executive power embedded in the constitution, which has hindered parliamentary work.

He called for a constitutional transformation to address these and other long-standing defects.
