Ghana’s national football team, the Black Stars, has dropped to 70th place in the latest FIFA World Rankings, following a winless start to the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers. The new ranking represents a six-place fall from the previous list released in July 2024. Ghana now ranks 14th in Africa, remaining outside the top 10 on the continent.
The Black Stars’ decline follows disappointing results in their Group F qualifiers, where they lost 1-0 to Angola and drew 1-1 with Niger. These setbacks have placed Ghana third in their group, trailing Angola and Sudan as they fight to secure a spot in the 2025 AFCON, set to be held in Morocco.
The defeat to Angola at the Baba Yara Stadium was particularly historic, marking the first time Ghana lost a competitive game at the venue in 24 years. Ghana will face Sudan in back-to-back qualifiers in October, a crucial opportunity to reverse their fortunes.
In the African rankings, Morocco leads the continent, followed by Senegal, Egypt, Côte d’Ivoire, and Tunisia. Morocco, which made history as the first African team to reach the semifinals of the FIFA World Cup, is ranked 14th globally.
