University of Ghana Student Files Lawsuit Against Management for Bringing back GURU into SRC Presidential Race

Asioh Joseph Mawuli, a second-year Bachelor of Arts student at the University of Ghana (UG), has taken legal action against the university’s management concerning the ongoing Student Representative Council (SRC) elections.

Mawuli’s lawsuit follows the re-entry of hiplife musician Maradona Adjei Yeboah, known as Guru NKZ, into the SRC presidential race after his initial disqualification.

Guru was disqualified by the SRC Electoral Commission due to his non-resident status, a violation of Article 30 of the SRC constitution, which requires candidates to be campus residents. Despite this, the decision was overturned, allowing him back into the race, prompting Mawuli to file his suit.

In his court filing, Mawuli argues that the vetting committee’s decision to disqualify Guru and another candidate, Emmanuel Owusu Amponsah, was lawful.

He also challenges the legality of the university management’s intervention, accusing them of interfering with the independence of the SRC’s Judicial Board and Electoral Commission.

Mawuli seeks court orders to prevent Guru and Amponsah from being included in the election process.

The case highlights tensions surrounding the SRC election, as students await further developments.
