UK Increases Financial Requirements for International Students from January 2025

The UK Home Office has announced new financial requirements for international students applying to study in the UK, effective January 2025.

Under the new guidelines, students will need to demonstrate higher savings amounts to secure a visa.

From January 2, 2025, students planning to study in London must prove they have £1,483 per month in savings, an increase from the current £1,334.

Those studying outside London will need to show £1,136 per month, up from £1,023.

These changes are in response to inflation and increases in domestic student maintenance loans, which have not been updated since 2020.

For a typical nine-month course, international students in London will need to provide proof of £13,348 in savings.

However, the amount can be reduced if a deposit on accommodation has been paid.

Additionally, students who have lived in the UK for at least 12 months on another visa will not need to provide savings evidence.

This increase adds to the financial challenges faced by international students, following a rise in the NHS surcharge to £776 per year in early 2024, alongside tuition fees and other visa-related costs.

Despite these rising costs, the UK remains a top destination for students worldwide.
