Former Black Stars captain, Asamoah Gyan, has officially stepped back from politics, denouncing his affiliation with the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

In a statement shared on his social media platform, Gyan explained that his involvement in partisan politics was not in the best interest of Ghanaian youth, and he has decided to focus on his humanitarian work through the Asamoah Gyan Foundation.

The former footballer had previously aligned with the NPP, notably being named chairman of the Youth and Sports Manifesto sub-committee under Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s presidential campaign in February 2024. He also participated in campaign activities, including a walk with Bawumia in Akropong.

However, Gyan, 38, has now announced that he is moving away from active politics, expressing that he will devote his efforts to empowering the youth of Ghana through philanthropic work, particularly in sports development. He concluded his statement by wishing all political parties a peaceful election ahead of the December 7 polls.

“I haven’t been fair to the youth and the people of Ghana. Henceforth I am not affiliated to any political party. I will continue with my humanitarian work and help the youth of Ghana in my own small way. Nothing political,” Gyan stated.
