Bawa Majeed, the Deputy Director General of the National Sports Authority (NSA), has responded to widespread criticism regarding the poor state of the Baba Yara Stadium during Ghana’s 1-0 loss to Angola in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers. Majeed sarcastically questioned whether Angola “played in the sky” in response to complaints about the stadium’s turf, which has been a topic of discussion since images of its condition surfaced online before the match.
Ghana’s coach, Otto Addo, partially blamed center-back Abdul Mumin’s error on the pitch, describing it as “not good.” However, Majeed countered, stating that both teams played on the same field, which had been inspected and approved by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) prior to the game.
“Were the Angolans playing in the sky? Both teams had professionals, and they all played on the same pitch. CAF approved the field for the game,” Majeed said on Asempa FM.
Despite Angola’s victory, their coach, Pedro Goncalves, also criticized the stadium’s condition, asserting that “a country like Ghana deserves a better pitch and a better national stadium.”
The pitch’s poor state is said to be the result of a five-day religious event held at the stadium in July. With Ghana’s defeat, they now sit third in Group F, trailing Angola and Sudan. The Black Stars aim to recover in their upcoming match against Niger on Monday, September 9.
