Tidal Waves Destroy Homes in Ketu South Municipality, Displacing Residents

Several homes in Salakope, Amutinu, and neighboring communities in the Ketu South Municipality of the Volta Region have been destroyed by tidal waves, forcing around 15 households to seek refuge in churches.

The devastating impact of the annual high tides along Ghana’s Eastern coast has resulted in significant damage to homes, livelihoods, and property. Speaking to Citi News, Sylvester Kumawu, the Assembly Member for the area, emphasized the urgent need for a sea defense system to protect the region from future tidal waves.

“The tidal wave has festered again and then it has come to destroy as usual, homes that are located along the beaches and taken away properties of the people,” Kumawu stated.

He further explained that the waves have submerged farm animals, boats, and fishing nets, leaving many residents without essential resources. Displaced families are currently staying in churches or with friends and relatives.

Although the government initiated feasibility studies on coastal erosion two years ago, no concrete measures have been implemented. Kumawu called for immediate intervention to prevent further damage and sustain the livelihoods of those affected by the tidal waves.
