Nuamah Doubtful for AFCON Qualifiers After Injury Against AS Monaco

Black Stars head coach Otto Addo faces a significant challenge as forward Ernest Nuamah may miss Ghana’s crucial upcoming Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers due to an injury. Nuamah, who has been in impressive form for Olympique Lyonnais, was forced off the field after just 17 minutes during Lyon’s 2-0 victory over AS Monaco last Saturday, suffering a thigh injury.

The 20-year-old’s early exit came during only his second consecutive start in the current French Ligue 1 season. His injury casts doubt over his availability for Ghana’s AFCON qualifiers against Angola on September 5 at the Baba Yara Stadium in Kumasi and Niger on September 9 in Niamey.

Nuamah has been integral to Coach Addo’s plans, featuring in all four matches during Addo’s second stint as Black Stars coach this year. He played a key role in Ghana’s 2-1 win over Mali in a 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier in June, where he scored a crucial goal.

While Nuamah’s potential absence is a blow, there is good news for the Black Stars as midfielder Majeed Ashimeru has returned to action after recovering from a calf injury that sidelined him for over two months. Ashimeru made a strong comeback in RSC Anderlecht’s 1-0 win over Dinamo Minsk in their Europa League final qualifier last Friday. His return adds depth to Ghana’s midfield as they prepare for the upcoming qualifiers.
