The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has announced plans to distribute 2,000 new streetlights across the city by August 25, 2024. This initiative aims to address the growing concerns about non-functional streetlights that pose safety risks to residents.
The announcement was made during the Public Financial Management Town Hall Meeting held in Accra on Tuesday, August 20, 2024. The meeting provided an update on various government projects managed by the Assembly since 2017.
Speaking on the issue, the Mayor of Accra, Elizabeth Naa Kwatsoe Tawiah Sackey, acknowledged the current problems with malfunctioning streetlights but reassured the public that the new installations would significantly improve nighttime safety.
“It’s not that we haven’t distributed streetlights. We have. Unfortunately, some are no longer working. However, I want to assure you that we plan to distribute about 2,000 new streetlights by the end of this week,” Mayor Sackey stated in an interview with Channel One News.
The Mayor emphasized the AMA’s commitment to using public funds efficiently to enhance the quality of life for residents. She highlighted several projects implemented since 2017, including the construction of a three-story, 18-unit classroom block for the Independence Avenue Cluster of Schools, a two-unit kindergarten block for Bubiashie 1 Basic School, and a childcare center at Old Fadama.
Additionally, she mentioned the distribution of 2,850 dual desks to public basic schools in the metropolis and Accra’s designation as the 2023 World Book Capital to promote reading.
The town hall meeting, attended by regional executives, local government officials, and community leaders, served as a platform for the AMA to account for its stewardship and to engage with the public on future projects. Mayor Sackey urged residents to continue supporting the government’s efforts, reaffirming the Assembly’s dedication to improving living conditions in Accra.
