Korle Bu Teaching Hospital has officially resumed its outpatient renal dialysis services after a three-week suspension due to a shortage of essential medical consumables. The closure, which began in late July, caused significant concern among renal patients who rely on the unit for life-saving treatment.
In a statement released on Tuesday, August 20, 2024, hospital management confirmed that the necessary consumables, which had been delayed at the Tema port, will be cleared by the end of the week, allowing the dialysis unit to resume full operations. The hospital also announced that dialysis sessions would recommence on Wednesday, August 21, 2024.
The closure of the renal unit had led to mounting frustration among patients, who had threatened to stage a protest at the facility on Wednesday in response to the prolonged disruption of services. However, the timely intervention by hospital authorities, with support from the Ministries of Health and Finance, has averted the protest and restored the much-needed services.
The hospital management expressed its gratitude to all stakeholders involved, particularly the Ministry of Finance for granting a tax waiver that expedited the clearance of the essential supplies. They also thanked the Ministry of Health for its continued support during the crisis.
