IEA to Host Presidential Debates in October and November 2024

The Institute of Economic Affairs (IEA) has announced its plans to organize presidential and vice-presidential debates in October and November 2024, ahead of Ghana’s upcoming general elections.

Despite initial criticisms from the National Democratic Congress (NDC) regarding a lack of engagement, the IEA has initiated discussions with political parties to ensure their participation in these debates.

Justice Sophia Akuffo, a distinguished fellow of the IEA, highlighted the importance of these debates, stating that they will offer voters a clearer understanding of each candidate’s policies and provide a platform for evaluating their capabilities.

“The IEA plans to hold the encounters in September and the debates in October and November. We will announce the precise dates, times, and venues after further engagements with the candidates and their political parties,” she stated. Akuffo also encouraged the public to stay informed through the IEA’s official website.

The flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has repeatedly called on the NDC’s candidate, John Dramani Mahama, to engage in a debate on the economy and other national issues.

However, the NDC has dismissed these calls, claiming that Bawumia’s motive is to revive his political career.
