Certain Blood Types Less Attractive to Ticks, Study Finds

People with a specific blood type may have a natural advantage when it comes to avoiding tick bites, according to recent research. This discovery suggests that certain individuals are less likely to encounter ticks and, consequently, are at a lower risk of contracting Lyme disease or tick-borne encephalitis.

Blood Type May Matter More Than You Think

Scientists have found that ticks are particularly deterred by one blood type. This finding was part of a study conducted at Masaryk University in Brno, where researchers examined whether blood type influences tick attraction.

 Study Findings

The study involved 100 participants with various blood types. The results revealed that ticks most frequently chose individuals with type A blood, accounting for 36% of cases. Conversely, those with blood type B were least likely to be targeted, comprising only 15% of cases. Blood types AB and O fell in between these two extremes.

People with blood type A may need to be more cautious about tick bites, as they appear to be more attractive to ticks. Meanwhile, individuals with blood type B can rest a bit easier, knowing they are less likely to be bitten by these arachnids. However, it’s important to note that this study had a small sample size, and further research with larger groups is necessary to confirm these findings.

Regardless of blood type, everyone should take precautions against tick bites due to the serious health risks posed by the bacteria and viruses they can transmit. Vaccination against tick-borne encephalitis is recommended, and it’s crucial to thoroughly check your body for ticks after spending time in tick-prone areas like forests or meadows.
