Organised Labour has declared an industrial strike set to begin on Monday, July 15, to oppose the sale of a 60 percent stake in four hotels owned by the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) to Rock City Hotel, which is owned by Agriculture Minister Bryan Acheampong.
The leadership of Organised Labour convened on Friday, July 12, 2024, a day after the National Pensions Regulatory Commission (NPRA) authorized the transaction.
On June 28, the NPRA instructed SSNIT to halt negotiations with Rock City regarding the sale of the hotels, pending further review and discussion. However, this directive was later rescinded, allowing the transaction to proceed.
The reversal by NPRA was announced in Parliament by Pensions Minister Ignatius Baffour Awuah on Thursday, July 11.
“I can confirm that the NPRA has now reviewed the process and believes SSNIT can move forward with the sale,” the Pensions Minister informed Parliament.
Dr. Yaw Baah, Secretary General of the Trades Union Congress, urged all workers to strike on Monday, July 15, until the sale is canceled.
“We are baffled by NPRA’s decision to approve this flawed deal. The sale of SSNIT’s shares in the four hotels is not in the country’s best interest. We demand the immediate termination of this transaction.
“Starting Monday, July 15, 2024, all workers in Ghana should refrain from going to work until SSNIT publicly cancels the sale process for its hotel shares.”
