Speaker Bagbin Orders Inquiry into Immigration Officers’ Assault on Woman at Aflao Border

Parliament Speaker Alban Bagbin has mandated an inquiry into a video depicting immigration officers assaulting a woman at the Aflao border within the Ketu South Municipality.

The issue was raised by area MP Abla Dzifa Gomashie, who questioned the training and conduct of the officers stationed at the border.

The footage purportedly shows armed immigration officers physically attacking an unarmed woman.

Speaker Bagbin instructed the Interior Minister to present findings to Parliament on July 29, 2024, stressing that public servants are meant to serve the public, not exert force.

He underscored that the use of force by public servants is particularly unacceptable when directed at women and called for a comprehensive investigation into the incident.

“I further direct that the Interior Minister report back to this house on the actions taken. It is crucial to remember that public servants are here to serve the people of Ghana.

“Public servants are distinct from the armed forces, who are trained and equipped to use force as a last resort.

“Public servants have volunteered to serve the public without resorting to force.

“The situation is aggravated by the fact that the victim is a woman, making the use of force completely inappropriate. Investigations will proceed, and we will await the outcome,” Bagbin stated.
