VRA Announces Plans for Potential Water Spillage from Akosombo Dam

The Volta River Authority (VRA) has announced plans to consult with relevant stakeholders regarding a potential release of excess water from the Akosombo Dam.

In a communication addressed to over 40 stakeholders, including the Minister for the Interior and all assemblies within the dam’s catchment areas, VRA’s Deputy Chief Executive in Charge of Services, Ing. Ken Arthur, emphasized the need for immediate consultations.

“The Volta River Authority (VRA) plans to initiate discussions on the potential controlled release of water from the Akosombo Dam. This precautionary step is essential for preserving the structural integrity of the dam and ensuring the safety of our communities,” the notice stated.

The notice also highlighted the intention to engage stakeholders in discussions about the possible consequences, mitigation strategies, and effective information dissemination. “We intend to engage you and the appropriate team to discuss the possible consequences, mitigation strategies, and information dissemination,” it added.

Previously, the VRA began releasing excess water from the Akosombo Dam on September 15, 2023, which led to severe flooding in the Lower Volta region. This controlled release continued until October 30, 2023, when the VRA officially concluded the operation.
