Accra, the vibrant capital of Ghana, is anticipated to confront severe congestion by 2030 due to substantial population growth, as indicated by recent statistics from the Ghana Statistical Service (GSS).
The GSS’s latest projections from 2021 to 2050 reveal a significant rise in population throughout the Greater Accra region.
By 2024, Ghana’s overall population is expected to surpass 33 million, an increase from 30.8 million in 2021.
Specifically, the Greater Accra Region is predicted to accommodate a rising number of school-aged children, estimated to reach 2.96 million by 2030.
Moreover, the youth demographic, aged 15 to 24 years, is projected to nearly double in size.
Deputy Government Statistician, Dr. Faustina Frempong, who presented the data, urged the government to address the rapid population growth in the Greater Accra region, which occupies smaller land areas.
The purpose of the population projection is to provide insights into future demographic trends and to inform policymakers, researchers, and the public about possible changes.
The GSS emphasized the importance of these projections for monitoring the progress of national, continental, and global development goals.
