Efforts underway to ensure Ghanaian MPs safe return from Kenya – Parliament

Parliament has recognized reports involving five Members of Parliament (MPs) entangled in a violent demonstration in Kenya on Tuesday, June 25.

The High Commission of Ghana in Kenya has confirmed that the five MPs, along with an accompanying officer, are currently safe and secure.

This information was detailed in a press release from David Sabastian Damoah, Director of the Media Relations Department at the Parliamentary Service of Ghana, on Wednesday, June 26.

Parliament has reiterated its strong commitment to guaranteeing the MPs’ safe return to Ghana.

“We acknowledge the public’s concern and assure that measures are being taken to ensure their safe return to Ghana,” a portion of the statement read.

The delegation includes members of the Local Government Committee of Parliament, such as the Committee Chairman, Emmanuel Akwasi Gyamfi; Ranking Member, Edwin Nii Lante Vanderpuye; Sylvester Tetteh; Thomas Ampem Nyarko; Mohammed Taferu; and Senior Principal Assistant Clerk, Anita Quartey Papaflo.

The Ghanaian delegation found themselves amid the Kenyan political turmoil

The statement clarified that the delegation was on a benchmarking visit to the Kenyan Parliament when the incident occurred.

“They were promptly escorted to safety within the Senate building and subsequently evacuated to their hotel by Kenyan Parliamentary officials,” the statement concluded.
