The High Court in Accra has dismissed an application for an injunction aimed at preventing the organisers of the #DumsorMustStop vigil from gathering at Revolution Square, across from the Jubilee House, after the organisers adjusted their meeting point and route for the event.
Initially, the conveners disagreed with the Greater Accra Regional Police Command regarding the starting location for their protest.
Subsequently, the police sought an injunction against the event, citing the location’s proximity to a security installation.
On Friday, May 24, the court withdrew the case to reflect the new venue amendment.
Selorm Dramani Dzramado, one of the vigil’s organisers, informed the media that they altered the venue in accordance with the Public Order Act.
“We explained to the public our choice of Revolution Square due to its historical significance and closeness to the Presidency. Given the police’s insistence on a venue change, we adhered to Article 41(i) of the Constitution, which requires citizens to cooperate with lawful agencies to maintain law and order. We therefore notified the police of the new venue and date in writing.”
He added that the court has yet to approve the vigil and that there will be a meeting with the police to restart the process.
