Idris Okuneye, popularly known as Bobrisky, a Nigerian crossdresser, has been sentenced to six months in prison without the option of a fine by the Federal High Court in Lagos.

The court’s decision, presided over by Justice Awogboro, aims to deter individuals from abusing and mutilating the Nigerian currency.

The judge ordered that Bobrisky’s jail term would begin on March 24, 2024, the day of his arrest.

Before the sentence was passed, the judge asked Bobrisky about his gender, to which he promptly responded that he was male.

Bobrisky’s legal troubles stem from his arrest by the Economics and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for offences related to money mutilation and laundering.

Last week, he pleaded guilty to four counts of abusing the Naira notes, totaling N490,000, by spraying them.

The crossdresser was apprehended after a video of him spraying money at the premiere of the movie “Ajakaju,” produced by actress Eniola Ajao, surfaced online.

The premiere took place last month at Film One Circle Mall in Lekki, a posh neighborhood in Lagos.

In a report published by Punch Nigeria on Friday, April 5, Bobrisky informed the court that he was unaware that tampering with the Naira note or coin constituted an offence punishable by law.

He expressed remorse and pleaded for a lighter sentence, promising to use his platform to educate his supporters about the illegality of money-spraying.
