Sheikh Aremeyaw Calls on President Akufo-Addo to Sign Anti-LGBTQ+ Bill

In a recent statement, Sheikh Shaibu, spokesperson for the National Chief Imam, emphasized the importance of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo signing the anti-gay bill into law.

Sheikh Aremeyaw stated that Ghanaians are eagerly awaiting the president’s decision on this matter, as he is the only one with the authority to sign the bill.

Speaking on the Ghana Tonight show on TV3, Sheikh Aremeyaw highlighted the rejection of gay practices by Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, noting that it goes against his faith, personal ethics, morality, tradition, and culture.

He also mentioned former President John Dramani Mahama’s stance on the issue.

However, he emphasized that the current focus should be on President Akufo-Addo, as he is the one in a position to take action.

Sheikh Aremeyaw urged President Akufo-Addo to stay true to his declaration of not supporting gay marriage and to sign the bill into law, stating, “Let us not hide behind technicalities of law and derail this whole process.”

The bill, officially known as the Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill 2024, was unanimously passed by Parliament.

It criminalizes anti-LGBTQ+ activities, with penalties ranging from three months to 10 years for those found guilty.

Despite this, the bill has yet to be assented into law.

Two independent applications for injunction orders have been filed at the Supreme Court, challenging the constitutionality of the bill.

President Akufo-Addo has urged patience as the country awaits the court’s decision, which will determine the next steps regarding the bill.

Various religious bodies have also called on the President to assent to the bill.

However, President Akufo-Addo has assured the diplomatic community that Ghana will not turn its back on its longstanding record on human rights observance and attachment to the rule of law.

The Supreme Court has yet to begin hearing the injunction applications.
