Ghanaian students claimed all three top International Excellence Awards at the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) to honor outstanding performance in the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).
The awards ceremony, held at this year’s Council Meeting in Freetown, Sierra Leone, saw an all-boys affair as the Ghanaian recipients proudly mounted the podium to receive their accolades.
Among the awardees was Amo-Kodieh Leonard Kofi Marton, a former student of St James Seminary Senior High School (SHS), who is currently pursuing a degree in Medicine at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology. Marton clinched the top spot with an impressive score of 623.5512.
Following closely behind was Dzandu Selorm, formerly of Labone SHS and now a medical student at KNUST, securing the second position with a score of 623.1882. Daniel Asenso-Gyambibi, another former student of St James Seminary SHS, currently studying at Ashesi University, claimed the third spot with a score of 622.4438.
To qualify for an Excellent Award, candidates must achieve a grade A1 in at least eight subjects, including English, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Health Sciences, Integrated Science, and one subject category of the core subjects.
Speaking on the remarkable achievement, Dr Eric Nkansah, Director-General of the Ghana Education Service (GES), commended the awardees for their outstanding performance, noting that their success showcased Ghana’s academic prowess on the international stage.
Dr Nkansah expressed pride in the consistent performance of Ghanaian students in the WASSCE, highlighting that last year, two out of the three top awardees were from Ghana. He attributed this success to the dedication and sacrifices of Ghanaian teachers and school leaders, emphasizing that their efforts were yielding positive results.
