The Ghana Fire Service has issued a stern warning to communities that attack their personnel during operations, threatening to blacklist such areas. This statement was made by the Ashanti Regional Public Relations Officer, DO3 Peter Addai, in response to recent attacks on firefighters.
The incident prompting this warning occurred at the racecourse market on Monday, March 11, where a fire outbreak ravaged over one hundred shops. According to Addai, firefighters responded promptly, arriving at the scene just three minutes after receiving the distress call. However, upon arrival, they were met with hostility from some individuals who accused them of delayed response.
Reportedly, some people at the market began pelting the firefighters with stones, demanding that they cease their efforts to extinguish the fire and instead allow it to spread to other shops. This aggressive behavior escalated, with firefighters being physically attacked when they tried to prevent looting at the scene. One firefighter sustained injuries during the altercation, leading to the arrest of five individuals by the police.
In light of these incidents, the Ghana Fire Service has issued a warning that any community found to be attacking their personnel will be blacklisted. The service emphasizes the need for cooperation from the public during fire emergencies and warns against hindering their efforts to contain such incidents.
