“I Support Anti-LGBTQ+ Bill but Against Imprisoning Gays” – Vincent Assafuah

Vincent Ekow Assafuah, the Deputy Minister-designate for the Ministry of Local Government, Decentralisation, and Rural Development, has expressed his support for the passage of the anti-LGBTQ+ bill in Ghana. However, he believes that simply ostracizing gays from society is not the solution.

Speaking during his vetting by Parliament’s Appointment’s Committee in Accra, Mr. Assafuah advocated for a focus on the reformation of homosexuals rather than allowing them to go astray. He emphasized that punishment should be aimed at reforming individuals involved in criminal activities, including those related to LGBTQ+ issues, rather than ostracizing them from society.

Mr. Assafuah highlighted the need for parliament to be actively involved in the reformation and integration of gays back into society, stating, “It is our responsibility to do so.”

The anti-LGBTQ+ bill, officially known as the Human Sexual Rights and Family Values bill, was passed by parliament on February 28. The bill criminalizes LGBTQ+ activities and prohibits the promotion, advocacy, and funding of such activities. Offenders could face jail terms ranging from six months to three years, with promoters and sponsors of LGBTQ+ activities facing three-to-five-year jail terms.

Mr. Assafuah’s stance reflects a nuanced approach to the issue, recognizing the cultural and traditional aspects of the bill while also advocating for a more rehabilitative approach towards individuals involved in LGBTQ+ activities.
