Minister-designate for Tourism Egyapa Mercer Urges Parliamentary Support for Completion of National Cathedral Project

The Minister-designate for the Ministry of Tourism, Arts, and Culture, Andrew Egyapa Mercer, has appealed to Parliament for support to finalize the National Cathedral project, which has faced delays and controversy.

During his vetting by Parliament’s Appointments Committee on March 5, 2024, Mr. Egyapa Mercer emphasized the economic potential of the project, stating that its completion could significantly boost the country’s growth.

Mr. Egyapa Mercer acknowledged the challenges faced by the project, including delays in private contributions and resistance to public funding in the 2023 budget. He urged Parliament to support the project’s completion, highlighting its importance in generating income and attracting visitors.

The Minister-designate noted that the funds for the project have ceased and stressed the need to finish it to draw visitors. He also highlighted the original intention of the project, which was to be a collaborative effort between the state and private faith-based organizations.

The construction of the National Cathedral has faced criticism from the public, with some questioning the transparency of funds allocated for its construction. Several prominent religious figures, including Archbishop Nicholas Duncan-Williams and Bishop Dag Heward-Mills, have resigned from the Board of Trustees overseeing the project.

The National Cathedral, intended to serve as a national place of worship and a symbol of unity and pride for Ghanaians, has been a subject of debate and controversy since its inception.
