President Akufo-Addo has reassured Ghanaians and the international community that Ghana remains committed to upholding human rights and the rule of law, despite the recent passage of the Proper Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values Bill by Parliament.
In a statement addressing concerns raised by the diplomatic community and friends of Ghana, the President acknowledged the anxieties surrounding the bill but emphasized that there would be no backsliding on the country’s human rights record.
President Akufo-Addo highlighted that a challenge to the constitutionality of the bill has been mounted at the Supreme Court by a concerned citizen. He stated, “It would be, as well, for all of us to hold our hands, and await the decision of the Court before any action is taken.” He emphasized that the operation of Ghanaian state institutions will determine the future trajectory of the rule of law and human rights compliance in the country.
The President did not delve into the details of the bill’s origin, stating that it is yet to reach his desk. However, he underscored the importance of respecting the legal process and the role of the Supreme Court in deciding on the constitutionality of the proposed legislation.
