John Dramani Mahama, the presidential candidate for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has unveiled a bold plan to tackle unemployment among health professionals, specifically nurses, by sending them to work in other countries. He believes that this initiative would be more beneficial than leaving them jobless in Ghana.
Mahama made this proposal during his visit to the Savannah Region, where he engaged with student nurses. He stressed the importance of ensuring that nurses are gainfully employed upon completing their training.
To implement this strategy, Mahama suggested the creation of a specialized unit within the Ministry of Employment tasked with recruiting nurses who meet the necessary standards for international deployment.
“We aim to increase the number of healthcare workers and nurses employed within our borders. However, we also seek to enter into agreements with foreign nations where our nurses can be stationed for fixed-term contracts,” Mahama explained.
He added, “Under the Ministry of Employment, we will establish a unit responsible for the recruitment of nurses, ensuring that they meet the standards required to work in international healthcare facilities.”
Mahama’s proposal is aimed at not only addressing unemployment among nurses but also leveraging their skills to benefit both Ghana and the countries where they would be deployed.
