The Deputy Foreign Affairs Minister and incumbent Member of Parliament for Asante Mampong, Kwaku Ampratwum-Sarpong, has been re-elected as the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Parliamentary Candidate for the constituency ahead of the December elections.
Mr. Ampratwum-Sarpong secured victory in Saturday’s primary, polling 555 votes. His closest rival, Dennis Kwakwa, garnered 167 votes.
The NPP had initially halted the primary process due to internal disagreements. However, a three-judge panel of the Court of Appeal, led by Justice Georgina Mensah-Datsa, dismissed an injunction filed by 35 dissatisfied NPP members from the Asante Mampong Constituency. The Court emphasized the importance of reconciliation, highlighting that all disputing parties are part of the same political entity.
The dissatisfied members had been seeking legal recourse since February 2022, primarily concerning issues related to polling station executive elections. With the legal impediment now resolved, the NPP has confirmed that the primaries will proceed as planned on Saturday, February 17, 2024.
Kwaku Ampratwum-Sarpong faced off against Dennis Kwakwa, a former Communications Officer of the NPP in the Ashanti Region, in the primary election.
The NPP, in preparation for the election, urged delegates to maintain decorum throughout the process. Paul Yandoh, the NPP’s Communications Director in the Ashanti Region, reiterated this call for orderly conduct.
