After deliberation with its media partners, the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) has decided to revoke the media blackout imposed on Mavis Hawa Koomson, the Member of Parliament for Awutu-Senya East and Minister of Fisheries and Aqua Culture Development.
The decision, announced on Friday, February 16, 2024, comes after Ms. Koomson fulfilled her pledge to engage with the GJA to address the incident involving an assault on David Kobenna, a morning show host of Cape FM, allegedly by individuals associated with the MP.
In a meeting held on Thursday, February 15, 2024, Ms. Koomson, accompanied by the Minister-designate for Information, Fatimatu Abubakar, met with the National Executive of the GJA at the Ghana International Press Centre. The meeting was attended by key figures from media organizations, including representatives from PRINPAG, GIBA, and the Media Foundation for West Africa.
During the discussions, Ms. Koomson expressed her commitment to support efforts to ensure justice for David Kobenna. Fatimatu Abubakar reiterated the MP’s willingness to collaborate with the GJA to resolve the matter, with the Ministry of Information also pledging its support.
Albert Kwabena Dwumfour, President of the GJA, commended Ms. Koomson for her proactive steps in addressing the issue and expressed optimism about the resolution process.
Meanwhile, the GJA and its media partners have maintained the media blackout on Farouk Aliu Mahama, the MP for Yendi, following allegations of assault against a journalist during the NPP parliamentary primaries.
