TEWUG Encourages Members to Continue Strike Over Vehicle Maintenance Allowance

The Tertiary Education Workers Union of Ghana (TEWU-GH) has reinforced its call for members to uphold the ongoing industrial strike despite recent discussions with the government. The strike, initiated on February 1, is centered on demands for the disbursement of members’ Tier-2 funds and vehicle maintenance allowance.

Following a meeting with the government on Friday, February 9, 2024, the TEWUG confirmed that while progress had been made with the payment of Tier-2 funds, the issue of vehicle maintenance allowance remained unresolved. Consequently, the union has urged its members to persevere with the strike until the vehicle maintenance allowance is satisfactorily addressed.

In a statement released on Monday, the TEWUG emphasized the need for continued action, citing the government’s failure to fulfill its obligations regarding the vehicle maintenance allowance. Despite directives to address overtime and extra duty allowance payments, the issue of the vehicle maintenance allowance persists, prompting the union to extend the strike until further notice.

The TEWUG’s industrial action, now in its second week as of Monday, February 12, 2024, stems from the government’s alleged disregard for the National Labour Commission’s ruling on Tier-2 fund disbursement, as well as the fair allocation of vehicle maintenance allowance and other remunerations.

The union’s National Executive Council (NEC) reiterated its commitment to pursuing these demands until a satisfactory resolution is reached, affirming its determination to advocate for the rights of tertiary education workers across public universities in Ghana.
