The Tertiary Education Workers Union of Ghana (TEWUG) has officially declared a nationwide strike, aligning with the Senior Staff Association and Ghana Association of University Administrators in their collective industrial action.
The impetus behind this move stems from the government’s failure to address the union’s longstanding concerns related to pension and conditions of service. Speaking at a press conference in Kumasi, TEWUG’s National Chairman, Sulemana Abdul-Rahman, highlighted that despite the unions’ joint request to the National Labour Commission (NLC) in October 2023, seeking the implementation of the Commission’s ruling on various allowances and pension funds, no positive response has been forthcoming.
Abdul-Rahman expressed frustration, stating, “The sheer failure of the National Labour Commission/government to comply with the ruling and address the demands of the three labor Unions in the public Universities… had left us with no option than to lay down our tools.”
Effective February 1st, TEWUG has decided to withdraw all its services from public universities, emphasizing their commitment to advocating for workers’ rights. The decision to initiate an indefinite nationwide strike reflects the union’s dissatisfaction with the perceived lackadaisical approach of the Government of Ghana in addressing the challenges faced by TEWUG members in traditional public universities.
Abdul-Rahman conveyed the gravity of the situation, stating, “Following the lackadaisical nature of the employer which is the Government of Ghana to address the challenges and problems of TEWUG members… the Tertiary Education Workers Union of Ghana (TEWUG) hereby declares an indefinite nationwide strike effective on Thursday, 1st February 2024, until further notice.”
